When a European client approached us with an unusual request to create an incentive trip for 25 young employees traveling by motorcycle, we knew we had something special on our hands. Incentive programs often involve adventure, but rarely do they take the form of a multi-state road trip on Harley-Davidsons.
The challenge was significant. Coordinating a group journey with dozens of moving parts, multiple destinations, and motorcycles as the primary mode of transportation required meticulous planning. But the result was one of the most memorable incentive programs we've ever produced.
Our journey began in Milwaukee, Wisconsin—the spiritual home of Harley-Davidson. After arriving at the historic Pfister Hotel, the group settled into one of the city's most iconic landmarks before embarking on a whirlwind introduction to Milwaukee.
To set the stage, we arranged a helicopter tour over the city. As participants soared above the skyline, the Hoan Bridge, South Shore Marina, and Lake Michigan shoreline provided a dramatic first glimpse of the American Midwest.
But everyone knew why they were really there.
Twenty-five Harley-Davidson motorcycles awaited the group. Before handing over the keys, however, we wanted participants to immerse themselves in the Harley culture. A behind-the-scenes factory tour offered an insider's look at the engines that power these legendary machines. Walking the production floor, participants experienced the sights, sounds, and craftsmanship that have made Harley-Davidson an American icon for more than a century.
The next stop was equally essential: the Harley-Davidson Museum. Here, the group traced the remarkable story of how Arthur Davidson and William Harley transformed a small wooden shed in 1903 into one of the world's most recognized brands. The museum's collection of motorcycles, memorabilia, and interactive exhibits brought the company's history vividly to life.
With introductions complete, the adventure could finally begin.
The convoy rolled out of Milwaukee and headed south toward Chicago.
The Windy City offered a fascinating contrast between historic architecture, legendary music venues, and vibrant urban energy. To showcase the city from a completely different perspective, we created a one-of-a-kind architectural tour on Harley-Davidsons, allowing participants to experience Chicago's famous skyline from the saddle.
That evening, the group stepped back in time at the legendary Green Mill Cocktail Lounge, where jazz still echoes through a venue once frequented by Al Capone. Overnight accommodations at the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel provided the perfect blend of historic charm and modern sophistication in the heart of downtown.
On Day Three, the road led east to Detroit.
While Detroit is often associated with the American automobile industry, it also holds a special place in music history as the birthplace of Motown. A visit to the Motown Museum gave participants an intimate look at Hitsville U.S.A., where Berry Gordy launched a musical revolution that introduced artists such as The Supremes, Smokey Robinson, and The Temptations to the world.
After the longest riding day of the program, the group welcomed a well-earned evening of rest at the historic Hotel David Whitney, located in the heart of downtown Detroit.
The final leg of the journey took us to Cleveland, Ohio.
The cities surrounding the Great Lakes have shaped American music for generations, and nowhere is that legacy more evident than at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Participants explored the history of a genre that transformed global culture and paid tribute to legendary DJ Alan Freed, whose efforts helped popularize rock and roll and break down racial barriers in music.
A visit to Freed's distinctive jukebox-shaped gravesite provided a fittingly symbolic conclusion to the journey. What had begun as a motorcycle adventure had evolved into a deeper exploration of American culture, music, and history.
As the motorcycles were loaded for transport back to Milwaukee, the group checked into ROOST Cleveland for one final evening before returning home.
The next morning, participants departed for Europe carrying far more than souvenirs. They left with stories, friendships, and experiences that only a journey across America's heartland could provide.
For incentive planners seeking something beyond the ordinary, this program serves as a reminder that the most memorable rewards are often those that combine adventure, culture, and authentic local experiences. Judging by the enthusiastic testimonials we received afterward, this Midwest motorcycle expedition delivered all three in abundance.
